Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
No sale last week due to the winter weather, compared to two weeks ago: best test on steer calves 500 to 550 lbs mostly steady, 600 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, yearling steers 900 to 1000 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 1001 to 1050 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 higher. Best test on heifer calves 400 to 450 lbs and 500 to 550 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher, yearling heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for both yearlings and calves today. Yearlings sold mostly in strings and loads. One consignment came off grass right before the storm so these steers still looked pretty green, otherwise flesh was mostly moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. A large calf offering today featuring many packages and loads of attractive quality calves, including many colored cattle. A couple weaned packages, but the vast majority of the calves came off the cow. A variety of flesh, from light to moderate plus. Most had full preconditioning, or at least a full round of fall shots. An active market with many order buyers and farmer feeders attending the sale. Wintery weather today with cold, windy conditions and blowing snow. Temperatures look to warm up at the end of next week which will be welcome to melt the ice cover. No sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 2. Happy Thanksgiving!!
