Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Sale not reported last week due to light receipts and too few feeder cattle two weeks ago to compare to this week's large offering and develop an accurate price trend. A large offering for today's annual Birthday Sale featuring many strings, loads, and packages of both homeraised and backgrounded cattle and a few consignments of fall calves. Moderate to good demand for finishing type cattle depending on flesh and quality, very good demand for cattle which can go to grass. Flesh varied quite a bit today, from light to heavy. Some tag on the cattle as yard conditions are very muddy right now, rain has been coming every few days and in large amounts. Some cancellations due to the muddy roads and lots. On the bright side of all the precipitation, grass conditions look excellent. An active market with many buyers and farmer feeders attending the sale today. Very little field work has been done as fields have been too wet. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, May 20.
