Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 550 to 600 lbs and 701 to 750 lbs mostly steady, 650 to 700 lbs steady to 2.00 higher with an instance up to 5.00 higher, 751 to 800 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Best test on heifers 550 to 600 lbs and 650 to 700 lbs steady to 1.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering featuring many packages and loads. Grass type cattle continue to see very good demand. Varied flesh again today, from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. Mostly average to attractive quality, slightly more attractive quality overall than last week. An active market with both buyers and farmer feeders in the seats today. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, February 4.
