Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearling cattle not well compared for an accurate price trend. Steer calves 500 to 550 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, 551 to 600 lbs not well compared, 601 to 700 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for several loads of yearling steers and heifers in mostly moderate to moderate plus flesh. Varied demand for calves today. Quality and shots on calves varied quite a bit and plainer packages, especially those not fully vaccinated, were met with light to moderate demand. Attractive quality, fully vaccinated calves, especially those selling in load lots, were met with good to very good demand. Flesh on calves also varied, from light to moderate plus. An active market on yearlings, moderate to active on calves with mostly order buyers interested in buying cattle today. Fields and yards remain muddy and colder weather is expected for next week. Many farmers are trying to wrap up harvest which has become difficult due to all the fall moisture. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 5.
