Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
No sale last week due to Good Friday, compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 700 to 750 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, 751 to 850 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, 851 to 900 lbs not well compared, 901 to 950 lbs steady. Best test on heifers 600 to 700 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, 701 to 750 lbs steady. Good demand for today's large offering of many packages, loads, and several strings of both home raised and backgrounded cattle which sold on an active market. Quite a few bangs vaccinated heifers offered for replacements, some of these are headed back to the country but the majority went out to feed. Flesh varied today, most cattle in moderate to heavy flesh. Some of these cattle are in town due to the continuing dry conditions as producers cut their numbers to try and stretch their grass. This area received none of the rainfall that was seen farther south and east earlier this week. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, April 16.
