Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: steers 600 to 900 lbs mostly steady except 801 to 850 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, instances up to 5.00 lower on 700 to 800 lbs. Heifers 500 to 700 lbs mostly steady, 701 to 750 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for another large offering this week. Light fleshed cattle suitable for grass and a handful of replacement quality heifers saw very good demand. Many packages, loads, and strings of both home raised and backgrounded cattle available today. Similar to last week, flesh varied, from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh seen at times. Quality varied a little more than last week, from plain to attractive. An active market with many buyers and some farmer feeders in the seats today. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, March 12.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
