Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: a larger offering this week with best test on steers 650 to 700 lbs steady to 4.00 higher, 750 to 800 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 higher, and 850 to 900 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Best test on heifers 500 to 550 lbs mostly steady with other weight classes of heifers not well tested last week for comparison. Good to very good demand for today's large offering featuring many loads and packages. Flesh varied, but mostly moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times, more flesh overall than seen last week. Quality mostly average to attractive today. An active market with both buyers and farmer feeders attending the sale today. Much better travel conditions this week than last week, some snow is predicted for some parts of the state this weekend but minimal amounts are expected. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, January 29.
