Compared to last week: yearling steers not well compared, best test on yearling heifers 950 to 1000 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Good demand for today's yearling offering featuring several strings and loads. More flesh on the yearlings than last week as fewer came off grass, most yearlings in moderate to moderate plus flesh. Quality varied, but mostly average to attractive. No calves last week to compare to today's calf offering of many packages and a handful of loads which was met with moderate to good demand with best demand for full load lots. Most calves off the cow with the exception of one consignment, weaned three weeks. Most of the calves had some preconditioning, those without at least one full round of shots were discounted at times. Quality on calves varied, from plain to attractive. A moderate to active market seen for this offering. Snow melt is creating some muddy lot and travel conditions and the area has had some fog as well which has hindered travel. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 6.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
