Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No feeder cattle sale last week, compared to two weeks ago: best test on yearling steers 900 to 950 mostly steady, 1000 to 1050 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Best test on yearling heifers 900 to 950 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's large yearling offering featuring many strings, loads, and packages with the majority of the yearling offering being steers. Varied quality today, from plain to attractive and most of the cattle were in moderate to moderate plus flesh. This was the first calf offering of the season and calves were met with moderate demand. Quite a few loads and many packages made up the offering with all of these coming off the cow in mostly light to moderate flesh. Most of the calves had full preconditioning. An active market on yearlings and moderate market activity on calves. A more limited crowd of buyers and farmers present today as there are many auctions to choose from this time of year.
