Market comments — USDA reporter

Wednesday was the second day of Green City Livestock's Annual Customer Appreciation BBQ Sale. Compared to the last regular calf sale four weeks ago, Wednesday's offering traded sharply higher, catching up with big gains over the last month but also reflecting the quality on hand that this sale is always known for. Most of the cattle were in attractive condition and a little wrung out in the midst of this week's heat wave. Much like Monday's yearling sale, buyer numbers weren't excessive but the power wasn't lacking any. Really no weak spot could be detected across any weight or class of cattle but 550-650 lb heifers In particular found a pretty hot ticket. The steer to heifer price spread was much narrower on Wednesday when compared to the early week yearling trade. Supply moderate, demand very good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
