Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Monday was the first of a two day Customer Appreciation BBQ Sale at Green City Livestock featuring load lot yearlings on Monday and home raised calves on Wednesday. Compared to the last tested market from 4 weeks ago, yearlings traded mostly 10.00 to 20.00 higher. The sale certainly lived up to its reputation as the Firecracker Sale with some exciting prices reached along the way. Several local reputation backgrounders were rewarded for their patience, when certainly it had been tempting to market long before now, when all time record highs are recorded almost weekly. Nearly all the cattle were marketed in load lots with most of the 9 weight steers bringing 2350.00-2450.00 per head; several stick out prices on the heifer end as well, including a load of 643 lb heifers going to feed at 2.99/cwt. A number of extra buyers were on hand but for the most part, the cattle on offer were scattered across a number of the regulars. Supply moderate, demand very good.
