Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No recently tested market to compare to but looking back four weeks, steers and heifers sold sharply higher, mostly 8.00 to 15.00 higher, up to 20.00 higher on some yearling steers. Excellent quality on hand for the first of a two day Annual Customer Appreciation Sale, featuring yearlings on Wednesday and calves and more yearlings on Friday. Over 30 straight loads and part loads moved through the ring on Wednesday. Most of the offering came from long time reputation producers who really know how to leave some good in their stock for the next guy; many consignments were picked up by repeat buyers who know exactly the potential these wrung out yearlings carry. Much heavier supply than a year ago, with many consigments coming to town early due in part to short grass, lack of feed and a feeder market that continues on an upward trajectory with very little resistance on the top side. For comparison's sake, in July of 2022, 876 lb steers brought a weighted average price of 178.16; this week an 876 lb steer brought an average of 244.97, a whopping 66.81/cwt difference. Some of today's sale prices dollared up to well over $2k per head. Supply heavy, demand very good.
