Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to the last sale two weeks ago, steers and heifers sold sharply higher with nearly all weights and classes benefitting from double digit gains, in many instances 20.00 to 25.00 higher. Probably even more impressive is that in a more fair and accurate test of similar quality, looking back four weeks to the Annual New Year's Special, steer and heifer calves on Wednesday still sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Slaughter cows 5.00 to 7.00 higher. The calf market got a little wild at times with wider price spreads than normal as buyers weren't afraid to push. String after string of home raised cattle, long time weaned with all the work done made their way through the ring with very few drafts having any trouble finding a new home. All signs point to cattle being in short supply in general but stock like this will become near impossible to find. Replacement heifers are always a featured attraction of this early February special and while the quality did not disappoint, the ceiling for those heifers wasn't quite as high as many expected it to be. Supply heavy, demand very good.
