Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: Yearling feeder steers and heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Steer calves 10.00 to 20.00 higher, except 550-600 lbs steady. Heifer calves 450-500 lbs 10.00 lower, over 500 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers, the market was very active for these light fleshed yearlings. Higher CME Live and Feeder Cattle futures along with much lower corn futures lit a fire underneath both the calf and yearling market. A very nice offering of outstanding quality spring born calves. Plenty of long strings and load lots of these good, ranch raised, light to very light fleshed calves. Plenty of buyers in the seats and on the internet competing harder this week to buy calves. Feed yard pen conditions have improved greatly, farmer feeders have made much progress with soybean harvest and are willing to take on some bawling calves. Calves are coming to town lighter than usual as the drought was severe across the area, and the flesh condition is very attractive. Next feeder cattle sale will be Fri. Oct 16, 2026, expecting 9,000-10,000 feeder cattle.
