Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Steers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs and steers from 650 lbs to 799 lbs were 4.00 to 8.00 higher with instances of 10.00 higher; steers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were 15.00 to 20.00 higher. Best test on heifers 500 lbs to 549 lbs and 600 lbs to 649 lbs were 5.00 to 10.00 lower, other weight classes not well compared. Very good demand for todays offering. Calves were long time weaned, home raised, fully vaccinated and clean haired. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed, hay fed cattle to moderate plus cattle coming out of a grow yard. Several consignments from reputation ranchers offered buyers multiple loads of one owner cattle. Best demand for the light fleshed, black hided cattle suitable for summer grazing programs. There were several consignments of calves right off the cow, some with out vaccinations and not castrated. There was one consignment of fully vaccinated steer calves off the cow that brought 4.00 a pound weighing just over 500 pounds. Most of the usual crowed of order buyers, a few farmer feeders and internet buyers made for an active market. A few consignments of old crop yearlings with most being offered as packages. Cattle inventory report this afternoon shows livestock numbers close to pre report expectations. More winter type weather in the forecast for next week. No feeder cattle sale next week as the Black Hills Stock Show is underway. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2025.
