Compared to last Friday: steers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, steers from 500 lbs to 699 lbs were steady to instances of 6.00 lower, heifers from 450 lbs to 599 lbs were mostly steady. No other comparisons available. Good to very good demand for today's nice offering of yearlings which consisted of several strings and lots of part loads and packages. An active market on the yearlings as most were light to medium flesh coming off dry pasture. Calves were well received with most being fully vaccinated, right off the cow and attractive for quality. Calves were light to medium flesh as pasture conditions continue to deteriorate due to warm and dry weather. Multiple consignments of reputation calves offered in full loads continue to bring a premium. Mostly order buyers, farmer feeders and internet buyers made for a full house and an active market. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, November 8, 2024.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
