Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago, steers less than 750 lbs sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher, over 750 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher. Heifers less than 600 lbs sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher and over 600 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher. Large crowd on hand for the 27th annual WLAC anniversary sale with three reining champs calling the sale, Jacob Massey (2023), Will Epperly (2022) and Jared Miller (2018). Ft. Pierre livestock is a magical place, as they can fetch top dollar for packages of cattle as high as some other auctions will sell load lots. Setting the stage for the load lots that blow the roof off the place. Bidding was fast paced from start to finish from a large crowd of buyers and some buyers stayed at home to bid from the internet. Top quality ranched raised fall calves and yearlings throughout the day with weigh-up in the buyer's favor. Quite a few loads of replacement quality heifers going back to the breeding pastures. Several loads of feeders hitting the summer grass instead of going to the feedlot.
