Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week best test on steers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher, steers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs and from 700 lbs to 749 lbs were steady to 2.00 lower, steers from 750 lbs to 799 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 higher, heifers from 600 lbs to 699 lbs were steady to 1.00 lower, heifers from 750 lbs to 799 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 higher, no other comparisons available. Good to very good demand for all classes of cattle, especially the greener, hay fed cattle suitable for summer grazing programs. Buyers continue to bid aggressively for the cattle. Lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers made for an active market. Several strings offered buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads of one owner cattle together. Several consignments of reputation replacement heifers were well received. Warm, dry conditions in the area are giving cattle the opportunity to perform well in yards that continue to dry out. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, March 29, 2024.
