Compared to last week; steers from 550 lbs to 699 lbs were steady to 4.00 lower, steers from 700 lbs to 749 lbs were 10.00 to 15.00 higher, steers from 750 lbs to 849 lbs were mostly steady; heifers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were mostly steady, heifers from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 lower, heifers from 650 lbs to 749 lbs were 3.00 to 4.00 lower, heifers from 750 lbs to 799 lbs were steady to 3.00 higher. Good to very good demand for todays large offering of feeders cattle and replacement heifers. Best demand for hay fed cattle that are suited for summer grazing operations. Several long strings of reputation cattle gave buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads of one owner cattle together. Most consignments were home raised fully preconditioned and long time weaned. Several consignments of replacement heifers were met with good demand. An active market with a house full of buyers and sellers competing with internet buyers made for a very active market. Some cattle continue to carry some tag as some pen conditions continue to be muddy. Flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate plus cattle coming out of grow yards. On feed report today showed the placement numbers a little larger than the average trade estimate. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2024.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
