Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Steers from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were generally 4.00 to 6.00 lower, steers from 650 lbs to 699 lbs and steers from 750 lbs to 799 lbs were mostly 6.00 to 10.00 higher; heifers from 450 lbs to 599 lbs were generally steady with stronger undertones, heifers from 650 lbs to 749 lbs were 6.00 to 10.00 higher. No other comparisons available. An active market with lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers for todays sale. Flesh ranged from light fleshed hay fed to moderate plus back grounded cattle. The majority of todays sale had been fully vaccinated, long time weaned and were fairly clean. Warmer weather this past week has created some sloppy pen conditions. Several consignments that offered buyers full loads or multiple loads were meet with very good demand.
