Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week the best test on steers would be 800 lbs to 999 lbs were generally 2.00 to 6.00 lower, not enough numbers on the heifers to make a good comparison, but lower undertones would be noted. Good demand for todays yearlings that consisted mostly of tested open replacement heifers. A couple strings of steers selling in loads with most yearlings coming off grass. A couple consignments of dry lot cattle were met with less demand than the yearlings coming off grass. Flesh condition ranged from light flesh cattle coming off pasture to moderate fleshed cattle coming out of growyards. A nice offering of spring calves were met with good demand, especially if they were fully preconditioned. A tougher go on the calves that were not fully vaccinated. An active market with the usually crowed of order buyers competing with the internet buyers. The next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, October 13, 2023 expecting a large run of yearlings and spring born calves.
