Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last weeks sale: feeder steers and feeder heifers would be unevenly steady except the 800 lbs to 849 lbs steers had lower undertones. A very active market with mostly order buyers competing with buyers on the internet. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed hay feed cattle to moderate plus cattle coming out of a growyard. Several long strings offered buyers the opportunity to purchase multiple loads of one owner cattle in the same sort. Lots of part loads and packages available to make loads out of as well today. Multiple consignments of replacement heifers were met with very good demand. Lots of optimism in the cattle industry right now and it seems everyone is wanting to have some inventory. Cattle inventory report out today showed larger placements than expected. Spring field work has begun and most of the area could use a good soaking rain as pastures are trying to green up and grow. Next feeder sale will be Friday, May 5, 2023
