Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 higher, steers from 600 lbs to 699 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 lower, steers from 700 lbs to 749 lbs were 1.00 to 3.00 higher, heifers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 higher, heifers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 lower, heifers from 600 lbs to 699 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher. No other comparisons available. An active market with fewer order buyers on the seats when compared to last week. Flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate plus backgrounded cattle. Several consignments that offered multiple loads of cattle from the same sort gave buyers the opportunity to purchase multiple loads of one owner cattle. Several consignments of reputation replacement heifers were met with good demand. More buyers activity on the internet today then what we normally see. Mild weather in the area has caused some sloppy/muddy pen conditions. No sale next week due to the Black Hills Stock Show. Next feeder sale will be in two weeks on Friday, February 10th.
