Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 550 lbs to 749 lbs were generally steady to 2.00 lower, steers from 750 lbs to 799 lbs were mostly 3.00 to 4.00 lower; Heifer calves from 500 lbs to 649 lbs were 3.00 to 6.00 higher while heifers from 700 lbs to 749 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 lower. No other comparisons available. An active market with good to very good demand for todays offering of calves. Flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate plus backgrounded cattle. Nice offering of attractive steers and heifers for todays auction with several consignments offered in multiple loads, plenty of part loads and packages for buyers to chose from to put loads together. Mostly order buyers in the seats with some internet bidders purchasing cattle. Milder weather this past week is making for some sloppy pen conditions and creating mud and tag on some cattle. Best demand for the lighter, greener hay fed cattle that are running out and staying clean. Most of todays offering has been weaned 45 to 60 days and have been fully vaccinated. Not as mush interest in the cattle that were right off the cow or cattle that weren't fully vaccinated. Black hide is still a favorite among buyers. Next feeder sale will be next Friday, January 20, 2023.
