Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 400 lbs to 549 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, 550 lbs to 649 lbs were 2.00 to 6.00 lower. Heifers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were 10.00 to 12.00 higher, heifers from 450 lbs to 549 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, heifers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 lower, no other comparisons available. Very active market on all classes of cattle with lots of buyers in the seats and plenty of activity on the internet. Multiple loads of one owner cattle were available in both yearling and calves today, lots of part loads and packages available as well. Yearling were off grass and in light to moderate flesh condition. Most of the calves were fully pre-conditioned and right off the cow. The cattle were attractive in condition as they were clean, open haired and coming off dry pasture conditions. Next feeder sale will be a special black hided calf sale November 2, 2022.
