Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week limited comparisons available: Steers from 500 lbs to 649 lbs were mostly 6.00 to 8.00 higher, instances 10.00 higher, heifer calves from 500 to 549 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 lower, no other comparisons available. Small run of yearlings today when compared to last weeks sale. Good demand for all classes of cattle today created an active market, more interest in the spring calves today when compared to last weeks sale. Cattle were light fleshed to moderate fleshed condition as the yearlings were off grass and most of the calves being fully preconditioned and right off the cow. Calf price remains highly variable depending on hide color, vaccinations received and packages compared to load lots. Next sale will be Friday, October 14th, expecting a large run of yearlings and spring calves. Warm up with beef.
