Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Last feeder sale was two weeks ago, limited comparisons available: Heifers from 800 lbs to 899 lbs were mostly steady to 2.00 higher, heifers from 900 lbs to 999 lbs were generally 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Good demand for today's yearlings that consisted of several strings off grass and a number of tested open replacement heifers. Better demand for cattle off grass when compared to those coming out of a grow yard. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed to moderate flesh conditions. Several consignments of spring calves that were full vaccinated, most were right off the cow, saw a moderate demand. A fairly active market on all classes today with mostly order buyers in the seats competing with buyers on the internet. Dry conditions continue to prevail in most of the local area.
