Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last feeder sale two weeks ago: Steers from 550 lbs to 899 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher with instances of 12.00 higher, steers from 900 lbs to 949 lbs were steady to two lower; Heifers from 550 lbs to 899 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 higher with instances 14.00 higher. No other comparisons. Today's Livestock Auctioneer Anniversary sale drew in a larger crowed of buyers and consigners. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed fall calves off the cows to moderate plus backgrounded cattle. Several long strings from reputation ranches offered buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads of one owner cattle together. A very active market as buyers tried to procure cattle. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
