Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: Steers from 450 lbs to 699 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 700 lbs to 849 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher; feeder heifers from 500 lbs to 749 lbs were generally 2.00 to 4.00 higher. No other comparisons available. Good to very good demand for this offering of high quality steers and heifers. Better demand for the lighter fleshed hay feed cattle to moderate plus backgrounded cattle. Several long strings of reputation cattle gave buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads of one owner cattle together, lots of part loads and packages available today as well. Lots of order buyers and internet bidders made for an active market today. A few weather related cancellations as parts of the area received some much needed moisture this past week.
