Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 3.00 to 4.00 higher, steers weighing 600 lbs to 649 lbs would be 2.00 to 4.00 lower; feeder heifers from 450 lbs to 549 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 higher, heifers from 550 lbs to 699 lbs were 2.00 to 3.00 lower. No other comparisons available. Good to very good demand for this nice offering of high quality steers and heifers. Several strings of cattle offered in multiple load lots along with plenty of part loads and packages made up today's sale offerings. Best demand for light fleshed hay feed cattle, with more moderate fleshed cattle a tougher sell. Lots of order buyers on the seats along with internet participates made for a fairly active market. Mild weather in the area has helped keep pens dry and the cattle clean. Next feeder sale will be Friday, March 12th, expecting a large run of high quality feeders.
