Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

No sale last week, comparisons made to the sale two weeks ago: Steers from 550 lbs and up to 899 lbs were mostly steady to 4.00 higher with the exception of steers weighing 600 lbs to 649 lbs which were mostly 2.00 to 4.00 lower. The heifers weighing from 500 lbs to 599 lbs were steady to 4.00 lower, the 600 lbs to 649 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 higher. No other comparisons available due to limited numbers. Good to very good demand for today's offering of fully preconditioned long time weaned feeder cattle. Several long stings of one owner cattle offered buyers the opportunity to buy multiple loads of the same sort. An excellent selection of cattle qualifying for the NHTC program were available today, along with a large selection of replacement heifers. Flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate fleshed back grounded cattle. Extremely cold weather in the area has hampered movement of livestock in the area causing a few weather related cancellations for today's sale. A fairly active market with a large crowd of buyers in the seats and on the internet. Next feeder sale will be Friday, February 19, 2021. Stay warm and stay safe.
