Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday steers calves from 500 lbs to 749 lbs were mostly 4.00 to 6.00 higher with instances of 8.00 to 10.00 higher depending on flesh and quality of the cattle. Steer calves from 800 lbs to 849 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Heifer calves from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher, while heifer calves from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were steady to 2.00 lower, no other comparisons made due to limited numbers. Good to very good demand for today's offering of fully preconditioned long time weaned cattle. Active to very active market with mostly order buyers in the seats, and the internet as well. The market softened after the cattle on feed report came out showing more placements than expected. Mild weather continues in the area allowing cattle to gain exceptionally well with the feed lot pens staying relatively dry, keeping cattle clean. Several long strings with multiple loads of one owner cattle; along with many part loads and packages offered buyers plenty of opportunity to buy cattle today. Flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed hay feed cattle to moderate fleshed cattle coming out of grow yards. Next feeder sale will be next Friday, January 29th. Stay Safe.
