Compared to last week: Steer calves from 450 - 499 lbs were 5.00 to 6.00 higher, 500 - 549 lbs were steady to 2.00 lower, the 550 - 699 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Yearling steers were not of comparable weights. Heifer claves from 400 - 449 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 higher, the 450 to 499 lbs were 5.00 to 6.00 higher, the 500 - 599 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher. The only weight comparison on the yearling heifers were the 950- 999 lbs and they would be steady to 2.00 higher. No other comparisons made. A very active market with good demand for todays sale. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate plus cattle coming out of grow yards. Todays calf offering consisted of a few consignments coming straight off the cow to long time weaned consignments coming out of grow yards. Lots of buyers on the seats and internet that aggressively placed their bid, wanting to own cattle. Today's sale offered several long strings of one owner cattle in both the yearling and calf consignments, offering buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads of one owner cattle in the same pen. This was the last feeder sale of the year. The next will be January 8, 2021. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
