Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week yearling steers from 950 lbs to 999 lbs were steady. This was the only comparisons made for the yearling steers. The 950 lbs to 999 lbs yearling heifers were the only comparisons and they were 5.00 to 6.00 lower. There was a good demand for today's yearling market that consisted of mainly tested open heifers and packages of steers. Several consignments of yearlings that were offered as full loads were meet with better buyer demand than the packages. Calves would be mostly steady. Good demand for today's offering of the fully preconditioned calves, most right off the cow. Several long strings of reputation calves were met with good demand. There were plenty of part loads and packages offered today that gave buyers the opportunity to put loads together. The next feeder sale will be Friday, November 20th, exacting 9,000 feeder cattle.
