Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week: Steers weighing 400 lbs to 449 lbs were 1.00 to 3.00 higher, the 450 lbs to 649 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher; Heifer calves from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher, heifers from 500 lbs to 599 lbs were 4.00 to 5.00 higher. The only comparisons made were on calves, no comparisons made on the yearlings as most of them were tested open heifers. Good to moderate demand for today's yearlings that were off grass and in light to moderate flesh condition. Good demand and a fairly active market on the calves today. The calves were fully preconditioned and right off the cow. Most of the calves were light fleshed as the winter weather this past week has greened the cattle up considerably. Several weather related cancellations again this week as producers battle muddy/snow covered roads and pen conditions. The next feeder sale will be Wednesday, November 4th. This sale will be an all breed calf sale. Don't forget to turn your clocks back and stay safe.
