Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearling steers and heifers narrowly compared due to limited numbers, lower undertones noted. Steer calves from 450 lbs to 599 lbs were generally 6.00 to 8.00 lower, heifer calves from 400 lbs to 549 lbs were mostly 3.00 to 5.00 lower, no other comparisons made due to limited numbers in their weight categories. Very good demand for today's yearlings that were right off grass, in light to moderate flesh conditions. A more active market on the yearlings than the calves, good demand for all classes of cattle today. Most of the calves had their pre-conditioning shots and were straight off the cow. Next feeder sale will be a special black hided calf sale, Wednesday, October 21st. Be safe.
