Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week steers 600 to 750 lbs sold mostly 5.00 to 6.00 higher and 800 to 900 lb steers sold 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Steers over 900 lbs sold steady to 1.00 higher. The 600 to 700 lb heifers also sold 5.00 to 6.00 higher and 700 to 850 lb heifers sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher. 900 lb heifers sold 5.00 higher with a fancy load of 836 lb spayed heifers selling for 240.50. Most of the cattle today were off grass. The receipts were moderate with good demand.
