A lighter offering of feeder cattle today, in part due to the special calf sales the last few weeks. Compared to last week steers 500 to 600 and 700 to 800 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 lower and 800 lb steers sold 8.00 lower. 600 to 700 lb steers sold 1.00 to 4.00 higher and 850 to 950 lb steers sold steady to 1.00 higher. Heifers 600 to 700 lbs sold 1.00 higher and 550 to 600 lb heifers sold 6.00 higher. Heifers over 700 lbs sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower. The offering was light to moderate today, again in part due to the special calf sale last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
