Market comments — USDA reporter

There was not enough cattle for a good comparison on steer cattle under 600 lbs., however a lower undertone was noted. Steers 600 to 650 lbs and 850 to 900 lbs sold $10.00 lower and 900 to 950 lb steers sold $2.00 lower. The 800 to 850 lb steers sold $1.00 higher. On the heifers no comparison for heifers under 500 or over 900 lbs. 500 to 600 lb heifers sold $2.00 to 5.00 lower and 750 to 850 lb heifers sold steady to $2.00 lower. The supply was moderate with moderate demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
