Comparing to two weeks ago there were limited steer sales under 550 lbs but a higher undertone was noted. Steers 550 to 700 lbs sold 3.00 to 9.00 higher while steers 700 to 850 lbs sold steady to 1.00 lower. Steers 850 to 900 lbs sold 6.00 higher. Heifers under 550 there was a limited test. Heifers 600 to 850 lbs sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher with the exception of 750 to 800 lb heifer selling 8.00 higher. Heifers over 850 lbs there was a limited test, but a higher undertone was noted. The receipts were good due to the holiday break and the demand was good.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
