Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers 500 - 600 lbs were steady with a weak undertone. Steers 600 - 700 lbs suitable for grass were 9.00 to 10.00 higher. Steers 700 - 1000 were 1.00 to 4.00 higher with the exception of 900 - 950 lb steers being 2.00 lower. The heifers under 850 lbs were 2.00 to 7.00 higher again due to grass suitable heifers. Heifers 850 -900 lbs were 3.00 - 4.00 lower. There was a nice offering of grass quality steers and heifers today. The receipts were moderate with good demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
