Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs there was not enough of a test, steers 500 to 650 and 700 to 750 lbs were 3.00 to 7.00 lower, steers 650 to 700 lbs and 800 lbs and above were steady to 2.00 higher. The Heifers under 550 lbs were 3.00 lower, 550 to 600 lb heifers were 4.00 higher, heifers 600 to 700 lbs were 2.00 lower, 700 to 800 lb heifers were steady to 1.00 higher, heifers 800 to 900 lbs were 2.00 to 3.00 lower and 900 to 950 lb heifers were 2.00 higher. Supply was moderate with a light to moderate demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
