This was the first weaned and vaccinated sale of 2021. Compared to last months weaned and vaccinated sale steers under 650 lbs were steady to 10.00 higher and steers over 650 lbs were 1.00 to 10.00 lower. Heifers under 450 lbs were 1.00 to 9.00 lower and heifers over 450 lbs were 3.00 to 14.00 higher. There were replacement quality heifers in the 650 - 800 lb range that brought an additional 4.00 to 9.00 more than the average of their weight class. There was good supply due to the break for the holidays and the demand was good.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
