Today at Fairview, as compared to two weeks ago, 300lb steer calves traded higher 9.00 on a light test, 400lb feeder steers traded higher 14.00, with 500lbs calves trading mostly steady with a higher undertone. Yearling steers at 600lbs traded higher 6.00 with 700-900lb yearling steers higher 14.00. Heifer calves at 300lbs on a light test traded higher 12.00. Heifer calves at 400lbs, traded higher 12.00 with spots higher 18.00. Feeder heifers 500-600lbs mostly steady, with yearling heifers over 700lbs trading higher 14.00. Noticeable price reduction on fleshy cattle. Overall, a well conditioned, mostly attractive offering, met with good demand on attractive trade.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
