Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, bulk of the receipts were pot loads and part loads of yearling steers and heifers weighing over 700 lbs and did not have a good comparison from two weeks ago but traded with a lower undertone. Steer and heifer calves sold in small packages and singles and were not well tested and also sold with a lower undertone. Demand was moderate to good on the yearlings as 109 hd of 982 lb heifers sold for 285.50; 58 hd of 872 lb steers sold at 340.00 and 55 hd of 789 lb steers sold for 358.00. The fed cattle market has been rocked on its heels for the month of July as fat cattle have lost 30.00 and are pressuring the feeder cattle market. Slaughter cows traded steady to firm with a light offering of slaughter steers and heifers trading 2.00-4.00 lower after last week's sharply lower market.

the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
