Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 500-600 lbs sold steady, with 600-800 lbs on a light test trading with a firm to higher undertone. Heifer calves weighing 400-450 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone, with 450-700 lbs all selling steady to firm on comparable weights, there were 6 pot loads of yearling heifers weighing 780-988 lbs were not tested with the largest consignment being 115 hd of heifers weighing 935 lbs at 311.00 and 104 hd heifers weighing 988 lbs at 303.50. Slaughter cows traded steady with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
