Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, feeder steers were unevenly steady with instances of 2.00-3.00 higher to 2.00-3.00 lower. Feeder heifers were mostly steady to 5.00 higher, with the majority of that advance seen on heifers weighing 550-650 lbs. The heavier offerings of feeder cattle were in mostly good demand this week, with weaned and backgrounded groups in very good demand. Slaughter cows were mostly steady on a limited test due to light receipts last week and heavier offerings this week. Slaughter bulls were mostly steady. Good demand noted for slaughter classes. Today's offerings included the following loads: 56 hd black steers, avg 907 lbs, 171.50 55 hd black and BWF steers, avg 887 lbs, 172.00
