Market comments — Decatur Livestock Market

Feeder Heifers, 344 Feeder Steers. Had a good selection of quality calves/yearlings on hand for the sale with prices reflecting the quality. 2-3 weight steers experienced the greatest gain as buyers fill orders for wheat pasture grazing; 6 weight heifers also saw an increase. Bred cows and pairs steady. Packer prices steady. Our last sale of 2021 will be Monday, December 13 - First sale of 2022 will be Monday, January 3 and we will begin receiving cattle for this sale on Saturday, January 1. This sale will also feature our weaned segment. To be included in this segment, cattle must be weaned a minimum of 45 days and arrive at DLM yards by the Saturday prior to the sale.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
