Market comments — Decatur Livestock Market

Stocker Heifers, 272 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 147 Feeder Heifers, 170 Feeder Bulls/Steers. Compared to last week, the market on most classes calves/yearlings was steady to $10/cwt higher with 5 weight steers gaining the most ground. Demand remains strong for weaned calves. Had a good selection of bred cows with prices advancing $50-$150. Packer cows steady to $10/cwt higher; bulls steady. Just a reminder, next Monday, August 2, is the first Monday and will feature the weaned segment. To be included in this segment, cattle must be weaned a minimum of 45 days and arrive by 5 pm the Saturday prior to the sale.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
