Market comments — Decatur Livestock Market

Stocker Heifers, 172 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 78 Feeder Heifers, 89 Feeder Bulls/Steers. We experienced a better market on most classes than what we have been seeing the past couple weeks. 2-3 weight steers and heifers saw an advancement of $12-$20/cwt as there was a demand for calves to finish out. Feeder steers were steady while heifers were $2-$10/cwt cheaper on average. Had a good crowd with several active buyers on hand for the bred heifers/cows and pairs that were available. Packers cows and bulls were higher. AS A REMINDER, DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS, WE ONLY ALLOW ACTIVE BUYERS IN THE AUDITORIUM. NO SPECTATORS AND NO KIDS ALLOWED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
